Plantronics Backbeat Fit 500 Review

Plantronics Backbeat Fit 500 is a pair of in-ear style headphones, designed for athletes who love listening to music while working out. You might think that an on-ear style headphone will be a distraction because of the clamping force, but that’s on the case with the Plantronics Backbeat Fit 500. On the contrary, the Backbeat Fit 500 is comfortable and provides decent passive noise isolation.

Yes, these pair of headphones might not have active noise cancelation, but for the money, the Plantronics Backbeat Fit 500 provides excellent value. Moreover, these are Bluetooth headphones, so you don’t have to worry about wires dangling from them.

What’s in the Box?

Opening the box, you will find the Plantronics Backbeat Fit 500 headphones, and depending on the color you bought, the headband will be either black or teal. With the headphone out of the way, you will find a 3.5mm cable to use the headphones in wired connection and a USB charging cable.

The Backbeat Fit 500 doesn’t utilize a USB-C connection; rather, it uses USB-A. Besides the cables, you will find a woven pouch for carrying the headphones and the usual manual for the headphones.

Design

Bringing them out of the box, the first thing you’ll notice about the Plantronics Backbeat Fit 500 is the headband. The headband has a unique geometric shape and gives you the ability to adjust the fit of the headphones on each ear.

You’ll also notice the foam used in the earpads and the headband. Both the earpads and the headband use memory foam, making the Backbeat Fit 500 comfortable even after long periods of usage. The clamping force of the headphones also helps with the comfort factor. The force is strong enough to hold on to your head for most cases, but not aggressive enough to cause discomfort.

The outer side of the headphones is made with matter rubber materials which are resistant to moisture. However, these make the outer sides dust magnets. Fret not! You can wash the headphones with water, thanks to the P2i nano-coating technology and the IPX2 sweat resistant feature.

On the right earcups, you will find two buttons and a LED light. One of those two buttons is for powering and connecting the headphones, while the other button is for managing your calls. The LED light is for the headphone’s status, and it’s located between the two buttons.

On the outer side of the right earcup, you will find all the buttons you need for managing your songs. Over there, you will find the play/pause buttons, buttons dedicated for track management, and a volume switch. The volume switch works with your mobile device.

Plantronics Backbeat Fit 500: Affordable and Great Bass

Despite being a Bluetooth headphone, the Backbeat Fit 500 comes with a 3.5mm cable for when you want a wired connection. Using the cable will automatically turn off the Bluetooth on the headphones. However, using the wire also introduces some limitations. The 3.5mm cable doesn’t come with an in-line control, meaning that to answer a call or to change the track, you’ll have to use your mobile device. But, using the 3.5mm cable, you will get a brighter sound compared to using the headphones in Bluetooth.

The mic on the Backbeat Fit 500 is great. You can record voice memos or take calls with the built-in mic without too much ambient sound, making the call quality crisper and clearer.

  • Battery Life

Battery life on wireless headphones is a major headache for many people. However, that’s not the case with the Plantronics Backbeat Fit 500. With the Backbeat Fit 500, you’re being promised of a battery life that will last you 18 hours. Depending on your usage, the volume you listen in and taking calls, you can easily use this for 15 hours straight.

It’s true that you can get 40 hours of battery life with other headphones from Bose and Sennheiser, but comparing the price, this is great. Suffice to say that the battery will last you a whole day, and if you’re not using the headphones, the charge stays for a couple of weeks before dropping dead.

In case the battery runs out, you can use the included 3.5mm cable to listen to your tracks. On the charging side, the Backbeat Fit 500 has no fast charging as it utilizes USB-A instead of USB-C. Even though the charging cable comes in the box, you’ll need to accommodate it with a wall plug.

  • Connectivity

You can connect the Plantronics Backbeat 500 both with wires and wirelessly. The headphones have an advanced Bluetooth chipset that enables you to use the headphones with two devices simultaneously. That’s not all, the headphone can hold up to 8 devices in its memory. Using these headphones, you won’t experience any drop in connection or interruptions.

Sound Quality

When it comes to sound quality, the Plantronics Backbeat Fit 500 packs 40mm drivers and an SBC codec. The SBC codec comes into play when you’re using the headphones wirelessly, providing you with reasonably good audio reproduction. However, don’t expect audiophile-grade sound as the headphones don’t feature any aptX or LDAC codecs.

With this headphone, Plantronics took the path of a balanced sound signature. Using the headphones, you will find the overall audio reproduction is well balanced and using equalizers, you can ramp up both the voice, making them brighter and crispier. You can also ramp up the bass if heavy bass is what you’re looking for.

If you love deep lows and great bass, you will find those using the Backbeat Fit 500. Even at higher volume levels, the bass doesn’t distort. At a reasonable volume level, you will get balanced sound quality. Besides the deep lows and the bass, you will also find high-mids using the headphones.

The Backbeat Fit 500 is great for listening to classical music as well. The instruments and vocal retain the brightness, and the bass performs excellent too.

The headphones might not have ANC, but for the price, the Backbeat Fit 500 provides fantastic value.
