Sennheiser HD 599
The Sennheiser HD 599 follows the same design as its predecessor 598. The color scheme is different though. You will get an ivory-colored headphone body, brown ear pads, and the quintessential Sennheiser metallic design with minimum branding on the ear cup.
The headphones are quite comfortable. It is mostly made of some hardy plastic, so the headphones are not heavy. They have very little clamp force as well, so you will have the ultimate comfort.
The sound quality from this headphone is pretty good, especially comparing to the other headphones of this price range. At such a low price it is hard to come by such great balance. The highs are warm and clear. Although the bass is precise, sometimes it is more or less overwhelming. The mids are pretty solid. You will enjoy accurate voice and acoustics instruments.
As any open-back headphone, the Sennheiser HD 599 has a good soundstage. You will be immersed in a three dimensional sound space and you will be able to identify the location of the sources individually. The experience is quite pleasant.
The headphone is perfectly balanced. You will not feel that any of the frequencies are overwhelming. That is to say, the sound is pretty flat and neutral. We certainly loved the overall mix of the Sennheiser HD 599. If you are looking for a headphone to wear during physical activities, then this is not the one for you. The headphones are stable alright, but they are not designed for workout sessions.
To get amazing sound quality due to the open back design, you have to sacrifice two things. First off, the headphone is pretty bad at noise canceling. It is great and will provide seamless sound quality in your home, but it won’t be able to keep all the dirty noises of commute or construction out of your ears.
Secondly, if you are planning on using this in your office, drop it straight away. The sound seeps through the open back and the entire office know what you are listening to. However, these sacrifices are negligible because the audio quality really makes up for it.
Product Design and Quality
Sennheiser HD 599 has a great design. It is actually made of plastic, but the sturdiness gives off the impression that it is made of steel. It is that good! Plus, due to using plastic, the headphone is very light.
It is a wired headphone. With the package, you will get two cables. One is three meters long and it comes with a 6.3mm end. And the other is 1.2 meters in length and it is 3.5mm long. You will get a 6.5 to 3.5 adapter as well.
The headband comes with a simulated leather-like material. It is not genuine leather, but it surely does not smell like a PU leather. The cushion on the headband is quite soft and comforting.
The earpads are plush and made of breathable material. Your ears will not get all sweaty after an hour of use only. They are super comfortable as there is almost no clamp force.
People often confuse the term “open-backed”. It definitely does not mean that the back has air ventilators to keep your ears cool. This design makes sure that air can pass through the openings. This keeps pressure from developing too much and you will not hear the slightest of echoes. As a result, the sound is clearer.
You can’t fold the Sennheiser HD 599 headphones. This means that they are harder to carry around. However, let us keep in mind that these headphones were mainly designed for use indoors, and they are perfect for that.
- Open back Design
- Great soundstage
- Balanced tones
- Lightweight, and minimum clamp force
- Breathable and comfortable ear pads
- Comfortable, plush headband cushion
- Replaceable cable
Sennheiser HD 599 is truly amazing. These headphones are quite affordable especially if you compare them with other headphones of the same output quality. The open back system, the balanced mix, and the clarity of the headphones are amazing.
Sure, Sennheiser had to cut some corners to provide such a product at such a price. For example, they made it a wired headphone where most of the headphones nowadays are wireless. Then, there is no controller on the headphones. Again, the headphone is unfordable, which puts a negative effect on its portability.
However, these headphones were certainly designed for indoor usage. And that eliminates the necessity of the portability as well as the wireless features to some extent at least.
This refers to the fact that Sennheiser put the best feature a great open back headphone needs for using indoors, and they did not bother to put the features that an open back headphone would not need. And if that is what you want and nothing more, the Sennheiser HD 599 is a great open-back headphone for its price. We certainly recommend you get it.
