Sony MDR-1A Over-Ear Headphone Design

Sony MDR 1A Over Ear Headphone

Compared to the discontinued MDR-1R, the MDR-1A earcup designs different and has softer padding. The cushions are a bit more angled and conform better on the head. The finish is more textured and stippled, and we like the new change. However, some audiophiles prefer the smoother feature of the older version. Besides, the ear cups rotate in the opposite direction compared to the first model. Now you can rest them flat when you have it around your neck. Moreover, they weight 7.94 ounces without the cable attached and slightly lighter than the older headphones. We found they fit snug but not too snug and accommodate different head sizes.

Even the cable connector has changed and has a plated gold ring. Included, you get two standard cables of 1.2 meters. One has a one-button inline remote with microphone. You can use these headphones with iPhones and Android devices. Furthermore, Android users get the SmartKey app to customize the controls. Another nice touch is the decent carry pouch, and you can buy higher-end cables for a better sound separate as well.

Sony MDR-1A Over-Ear Headphone Performance

Once you place the MDR-1A on your ears, you know it sounds just right. The bass, midrange, and treble are balanced and smooth. Even the stereo soundstage gives a spacious sound with a dynamic range. If you are an audiophile, you will love these over-ear headphones. The tunes sound accurate, and it has no overwhelming bass or zippy treble. On the other hand, it is comfortable to wear for hours of listening.

These new headphones sound better than the MDR-1R from the bass through to the treble. You do not get a low bass that is muddy or not clear. Even the vocals and instruments come through clear. However, when compared to the Audio Technica’s ATH-MSR7 that has a similar design trait, you do get a better sound definition. The sound is more transparent than the Sony earphones and superb if you listen to acoustic music. So with the MDR-1A you will get a midway sound between the MDR-1R and ATH-MSR7.
